Under a preliminary agreement signed between Whanganui River iwi and the Crown in Parliament yesterday, the Whanganui River will have the legal status of a person.

The settlement means the river has all the rights, duties and liabilities that come with personhood and would be represented by two officials, one from the Whanganui iwi and the other from the Crown.
