NZ Masters Games
February 2009 (biannually). Centred on Springvale Park in its own Games Village, this nine day event comprises 67 different sports and over 580 individual events. A highlight of the games is the proximity of the venues and the main shopping areas, most within 10 minutes drive from the village.

NZGP Hydroplane Racing
Held each February, Australasia's fastest boats on water compete on a 2000-metre oval course to be the fastest person ever on the Whanganui River. The river explodes into life with air shattering sound and jaw-dropping action! Feel the fear! Experience the thrills! Plenty of great family entertainment, drink & food, kids' entertainment, static displays. These mad men on water push their craft to the limit.  Free entry. Click here for more information.

Billy Webb Rowing Regatta
This revival of an exciting triumph, the regatta occurs annually in December, celebrating the city’s own great William Webb’s magnificent feat on the Whanganui River. On Boxing Day, 1906 he raced from Kaiwhaiki to Upokongaro, still known as Webb’s Mile, to trump the 5x world champion, Australian James Stanway. In 1907, Webb won the World Singles Sculls Championship on Sydney’s Paramatta River and was honoured by ‘The Māori Chieftains of Wanganui’.
