Primary Health Organisations

Primary Health Organisations are local structures funded by District Health Boards (DHBs) to provide essential primary health care services to those people who are enrolled with the PHO. Primary health care relates to the professional health care received in the community, usually from the GP or practice nurse. Primary health care covers a broad range of health and preventative services, including health education, counselling, disease prevention and screening. There are 17 general practices within the WRPHO, with an enrolled population of approximately 60,000. We provide subsidised fees when you see your GP and also offer a range of free health services (referred through your GP or Practice Nurse), e.g. counselling service, immunisation service, social worker, diabetes support, pharmacist facilitators, specialist nurses.

Improving access to services has seen the WRPHO develop the Whanganui Accident & Medical clinic and set up two salaried general practices – Whanganui City Health and Gonville Health.
