The history of the Wanganui region stretches right back into the mists of time. In 1831 when European traders arrived, the area already had an active settlement of native Maori living on the banks of the river in the harbour area where the water flows into the Tasman Sea. It was a place of fertile land and bountiful food. The name Wanganui means Big Harbour in Maori.
